Axi Muniain — Surfer, explorer, founder

Axi Muniain was born in a rural farmhouse in Zarautz, very close to the sea. There, from an early age, he learned that the Cantabrian Sea is not conquered—it is respected. He grew up listening to its rhythm, observing its changes, and learning its language. From this deep connection with the ocean emerged one of the most distinctive and influential careers in contemporary European surfing.

Competitive career

From a very young age, he stood out in competition, becoming champion on numerous occasions at local, regional, and national levels, both in junior categories and in the top division, within the Basque Circuit and the Spanish Ballantine’s circuit. He also became European vice-champion with the national team and won multiple innovative surfing “Expression Session” events, as well as big wave competitions. Specialized media soon began referring to him as “the complete surfer” or “the sea wolf.”

His international recognition came especially in big wave surfing: five-time finalist in the world XXL Awards—the Oscars of surfing—and the first surfer in history to become a double finalist in the same edition.

Exploration: unnamed waves, unmapped coastlines

What defines Axi Muniain’s trajectory is self-determination. For more than two decades, he has traveled wild coastlines from Ireland to the most remote corners of Morocco and the Sahara alongside Moroccan surfer Jérôme Sayoun, discovering and surfing waves that did not appear on any map. This exploratory spirit also involved an unusual sacrifice in professional surfing: giving up the perfect big wave in order to keep searching for the unknown.

Among his milestones is the exploration of Velarra, an offshore wave considered impossible to surf by paddling. To tackle it, he designed and built a four-meter (12’6) board, the longest ever made in Europe at that time. On the Basque-French coast, he also developed innovative solutions for big wave surfing, using weight and lead systems to counteract the winds generated on large waves.

Ingenuity and self-sufficiency

His exploration was never limited to the water. Axi designed and built his own camper truck as a mobile base for remote expeditions, and developed safety and rescue systems later used in real-life situations.

Basque culture and the first surf dictionary in Basque (Euskera)

Over the years, he has collected traditional Basque maritime terminology—winds, tides, currents—integrating it with contemporary surf language to create the first dictionary of surf terminology in Euskera, an unprecedented work in a discipline historically dominated by English. Its publication is scheduled for 2026.

Social commitment and institutional recognition

Faced with a lack of recognition in the sector, Axi undertook a long legal process that culminated in 2024 with the creation of the first association of surf schools in the Basque Country, EUSKAL HERRIKO SURF ESKOLEN ELKARTEA. At the same time, he built several surf schools with his own hands—now his main source of income—and became a pioneer of night sessions in big wave and barreling surf.

Today, Axi Muniain remains one of the most authentic and respected figures in European surfing. His legacy is not measured in championships but in opened paths, recovered knowledge, and invisible maps that exist because someone chose to search for them.

Surfing that is not consumed: it is lived in.
